Zenith Port Royal Chronograph

The story of the Port Royal

Zenith is one of the oldest Swiss watchmakers, founded in 1865 by Georges Favre-Jacot in Le Locle. He envisioned a new way of watch manufacturing, where all the components of a timepiece would be made under one roof, ensuring the highest quality and precision. The company was named Zenith, after the highest point in the sky, symbolizing his ambition and excellence.

Zenith is best known for its El Primero movement, the world’s first automatic chronograph, launched in 1969. The El Primero beats at a high frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, which allows it to measure time with a tenth of a second accuracy, being the first to achieve such an impressive accomplishment. It is also one of the few movements that can display the date, the small seconds, and the chronograph functions on the same axis. It was also famously used in Rolex Daytona, more commonly known as Zenith Daytona, a revolutionary chronograph watch that is rapidly growing in price.
The looks

When seen, the dial is what instantaneously catches your eye. The black dial with white Arabic numerals and four distinct hour markers at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock serves as a foundation for the main feature of this watch - the three subdials.

First, we can notice the small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock. This subdial shows the running seconds of the watch, independent of the chronograph function. It has a silver hand and a scale of 60 seconds. The second sundial that attracts our attention is the 30-minute counter subdial at 3 o’clock. This one records the elapsed minutes of the chronograph function, up to 30 minutes. It has a silver hand and a scale of 30 minutes, with markers every 5 minutes. And last but not least, the 12-hour counter subdial at 6 o’clock. This subdial records the elapsed hours of the chronograph function, up to 12 hours. It has a silver hand and a scale of 12 hours, with markers every hour.

The chronograph function can be activated by pressing the pusher at 2 o’clock, which starts, stops, and resets the central chronograph seconds hand. The pusher at 4 o’clock resets the chronograph function to zero. The watch also has a date window at 4:30, which displays the date of the month. The luminescent hour and minute hands are paired with a slim and elegant chronograph hand, that is always ready at 12 o’clock, waiting for a push of a button to start precisely measuring the elapsed time.

When turned, the breathtaking El Primero movement can be seen through a sapphire case. The winding mechanism bears the writing “Zenith El Primero”, removing any doubt about the performance of this watch. Around the movement, the writings “Swiss Made”, “01/02.0451.400”, “Water Resistant”, “Zenith”, “Port Royale”, and “Stainless Steel” stand as a proud testament to the quality of this watch.

The whole masterpiece is encapsulated in a simple and functional 40 mm stainless steel case, that ensures no harm will be done to the treasure inside. A comfortable stainless steel bracelet with a double-fold clasp will hold the timepiece to your wrist.
