Rolex Datejust 36 Gilt Dial Circa 1973

A truly special vintage Rolex Datejust featuring an original, untouched gilt dial with spectacular natural patina.

What makes this watch exceptional is the dial. Over decades, its surface has developed countless tiny patina spots that resemble stars scattered across a dark night sky — giving it the beautiful “Star Dial” appearance.

And that is part of the magic of vintage gilt dials: no two dial are ever the same. Time, environment and decades of natural ageing create a completely individual patina. This dial can never be reproduced — it has taken decades to become what it is today.

Genuine untouched gilt dials are particularly sought after because many original dials were replaced, refinished or restored during the long lives of these watches. After professionally buying and selling watches since 2014, this is only the third original, untouched gilt-dial Datejust we have personally encountered.

The watch was serviced by Rolex around 2020 and worn only twice afterwards. During the service, Rolex fitted new hands and a new bracelet, while the beautiful original dial was preserved untouched.
